Although George Harrison was never known for being a strong singer his vocals were distinctive and following the break up of the band in 1970 Harrison released his first solo single ‘All Things Must Pass’. The single was known for being the first solo recording by any of The Beatles to top the charts following their break up.
Following on from this Harrison played the first major rock charity event at Madison Square Garden in 71 to help raise money for aid to that famine-ravaged nation of Bangladesh.
Harrison released another album soon after this named ‘Living in the Material World’ which sold well and was popular across the nation. During the 80’s George released another album ‘Somewhere in England’ and also started a successful movie producing career.
In 1987, Harrison made a return to the music industry and topped the charts with his album ‘Cloud Nine’. In 1988, George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne, and Roy Orbison formed the ‘Traveling Wilburys’, who have since released two very successful albums.
In 1997 Harrison was diagnosed with cancer and had throat surgery. He considered his cancer to be caused by his 30 years of smoking so he quit in 1998. However, throughout 2000 and 2001 Harrison would be treated for his cancer in various countries until November 29th 2001. George Harrison died of cancer at a friend’s home at the age of 58.
